What have you been up to?

IMG_5153I can’t believe how quickly summer flew by. I was so busy with summer camps and private lessons – I am so lucky to have this job!

Now that fall is upon us, it’s time to think ahead about winter projects and classes! Need some ideas?!

Last weekend, one of my younger students made these adorable bunny slippers. It only took her two hours to cut and sew these cuties. Can you see the face? Her favorite part was using the Silhouette to design and cut out the bunny face and gluing the rhinestone on for the nose. We also used hot glue to write her name on the soles. The rubbery finish of the hot glue acts as a nice anti-slip aid!

You could also make one of these cuddly mermaid or shark tail blankets. With elastic at the top and a place to keep your toes warm, it’s the perfect rainy day accessory!

Private lessons will continue all fall and winter on Saturdays! Get in touch to schedule a class for yourself!

What I’m wearing.

IMG_0988If you’ve stopped into the shop lately you’ll see I’m sporting a new accessory! Camille is quite comfortable riding along all day in her sling or carrier while I sew and teach. It really frees up my hands so that I can still get some work done while she sleeps and enjoys some snuggles! There are lots of different ways to “wear” a baby – yes, baby wearing is a thing. I’ve been using my Moby Wrap, which I totally love. However, it does tend to get pretty hot with that huge piece of thick fabric wrapped around your body several times!

Many of my friends swear by the good ‘ole ring sling so I decided to give it a try. First step… Make one! Don’t you find that you hate to buy anything that you can make? And why not make it when you have such fun fabrics right at your fingertips! Seriously, the hardest part about making this sling was choosing the fabric and rings. So I made my first one and I love it! After teaching a small group how to make the ring sling, I discovered some ways that I would change the process and add some pockets or make the sling reversible.

I’ve added this class to the calendar for October 29th from 1-3pm. The class is $55 and includes your supplies (2 1/2 yards of your favorite fabric and coordinating aluminum rings). In one afternoon you can complete a great gift or valuable tool to keep for yourself and your little one! Once you make one you won’t be able to stop!

If your machine is in need of some TLC, Dennis Myers, our fabulous sewing machine doctor, can get your machine sewing like the wind!  He picks up weekly on Wednesdays.

Private lessons are most popular once the weather gets chilly,  tackle that project you’ve always wanted to, whether it’s garment sewing, home dec projects or modern quilting.  These lessons are student guided and address what you want to learn in a comfortable, low stress  one on one setting.

And, don’t forget our Monthly Modern Sewing Social.  Scheduled the first Thursday of each month, pack up your machine for a fun night out with the girls!

Introducing monthly group classes!

Everyone’s been asking for group classes, so here they are!

First Tuesdays will be Quilt Clinic.  We’ll be playing with modern quilting methods while making simple projects such as totes & zippered pouches.  The emphasis being on “play”, this is what helps our creativity-when was the last time you actually played and experimented with fabrics, color and thread?  October 4th we’ll be making a  tote using a couple different fabrics and in-line quiting-this really changes the look of fabrics when using different colors of thread-this is easy but very impressive!

Second Tuesdays will be Alterations Clinic, some months will have a specific topic as well, so bring something that applies, as well as some other garments to work on.  I’ll guide you on each step – hems, taking in or letting out, etc.   October 11 will be Hollywood hems, learn how to hem your jeans leaving the original stitching, very cool – seriously!

Third Tuesdays will be project classes.  Easy stuff  like skirts, accessories, wine totes, applique pillows, and more!  October 18 will be a skirt workshop-I am in love with all the maxi skirts at Anthropologie and just can’t get enough!  I”ve made two so far, using our fabulous Amy Butler Challis.  Flowing fabric like challis, stable knits or soft cords would be perfect!

November classes will include a fun quilted zippered pouch,  open alterations clinic and  a quilted wine tote.  Stop in to see the class samples – I’ve been having lots of fun working on them!  And, of course, your class suggestions are always welcome-if you see a project you’d like to learn, let me know!

Remember to sign up early and bring a friend!  Each session is $35 and meets from    6-8:30pm.  We do have a minimum of 3 students to hold the classes, and payment is due upon registration, which must be made at least 5 days in advance, you’ll also get your supply list and homework at that time!  Class sizes are limited.  And, don’t worry – we still have lots of time open for private lessons!

Many of the projects require you to cut and prepare before the class-that way we can get sewing faster!!  You can always stop in to prep your class projects in the studio, too,  just call ahead and we’ll make room for you!  Group classes are for intermediate seamsters, you should be familiar with your machine and  sew confidently. Private lessons are suggested for beginners.

You are encouraged to bring your own machine & sewing kit (be sure all your tools are labeled!

Tuesdays just got fun!

Sewing for your kiddies class! 3

For a long time now I’ve been promising a good number of you that I’d be doing some sewing for toddlers classes and kids clothes classes. We really love sewing for the little buggers. It is so simple and really uses very little fabric. You can really do a lot of repurposing when sewing for smaller kids, too.

So are you ready? In April we’ll be having two great classes. I’ve been in touch with a fantastic designer that I absolutely love! Figgy’s Patterns are great! It is so hard to find patterns for boys that are modern and fun without being over detailed and difficult to sew. Shelly really made it easy to sew cool, fun, and easy clothes for your little guys. The patterns we’ll be working from this month are certainly unisex and suitable for beginner sewers!

I’ve been going crazy for the Dapper’s. Elastic waistband pants are great for kids but I hate that they always end up looking too homemade. These pants are great – flat front, pockets, elastic in the back! Rex loves wearing his – your kids will too!

The other class we’ve got coming up is the Tee for Two. This is a raglan tee shirt for boys and girls. The girls’ design has a little gathering under the neckband – adorable! Of course, I left the frills off of Rex’s and instead opted for a repurposed look for him. We’ve always found it challenging to find nice knit fabrics (don’t worry – we’re working on that) so I used two tees that were too small for my older kids to make one for Rex! I love the results! Check him out in this action shot – by the way, the hat is also made by mommy – it’s from One Yard Wonders!

Tee for Two April 9th, 11am – 2pm, $35 (supply list for class)

Dapper Dillingers April 13th, 6 – 9pm, $35 (supply list for class)

Color Play 1

So many of our customers and students feel nervous and anxious when faced with the challenge of grouping colors and patterns. When admiring a shelf or stash of fabrics filled with all of your favorite colors, how do you choose?

Heidi is a pro at helping you keep your cool when faced with developing themes and grouping colors! Don’t you love her sample? It’s been hanging in the shop and attracting so much attention!

By the end of class you’ll feel more confident about working with large prints, patterns, and bold solids.

COLOR PLAY APR 7, 6-8:30pm  $45 (THURS)** The date for this class has been changed to Saturday morning, April 23, 10am-1.  We’ll be meeting for our Modern Quilt Social on April 7th-please join us for some stitchy fun!

Earn a badge at Stitch!

We had a great time on Tuesday with another group of Brownies! The eleven 9 year olds were excellent with the sewing machine. They managed to complete their needle books with time to spare so that they could sing the Brownie Smile Song with Miss Heidi!

Generation Next 1

Have you seen the fresh new patterns at McCall’s? I’m so excited to see some familiar faces with patterns of their own!  As you know, I frequent NY often to visit my son (how convenient-huh??)  and love to stop in Williamsburg to visit all the fabulous local talent showcased in boutiques up and down  the hip streets in Brooklyn.  A few years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting with Patty, at Flirt.  They have the coolest fashions, and also have a sewing workshop called Home Ec, where they teach sewing.  Don’t ask me how I found them, it must have been my fabric radar!!

I just picked up a copy of Vogue Patterns sewing magazine and was thrilled to read about her, among other fabulous seamsters, featured on their pages.  You have to check out their skirt pattern, as well as patterns from Marcy Tilton, Rebecca Turnbow, Melissa Watson and Megan Nicolay.  All of them are very cool and trendy.  I love finding patterns that showcase similar ready to wear designs as H&M, Anthropologie, Eileen Fisher, etc.

And don’t miss the article on Sewing Lounges!!  It’s so great to see so many like minded seamsters sharing their skills as we do right here at Stitch Cleveland.   There’s Helen at Seam Divas in Vancouver, Michelle, Gina and Lupine at Modern Domestic in Portland, Citycraft in Dallas,  Diana at Make Workshop in NY and so many others!!

So, get your sewing machines out, open up that fabric stash…and get sewing!  Sewing is def not a dying art!  Stop in and take advantage of Free Sew sessions, schedule a few private lessons or check out our class listings.  We’re here to keep sewing alive and want you to join in the fun and hang at your local sewing lounge, Stitch Cleveland!

Snow day?

I’m finding myself looking forward to being snowed in! I know, I’m strange that way-I just see it as more time to sew!  Each year in January I make a list of new  and different things I’d like to do in the coming year – these will also be reflected in the classes that Megan and I will be scheduling for you here at Stitch Cleveland.  We’re here to motivate your creativity and get those wheels spinning!  …and those machines stitching!

This year I’d like to continue to make clothing-something that comes very natural to me.  I’ll purchase something,  make a pattern from it and sew a couple more in different fabrics and colors, changing some details as I go.  Most often I have just the right fabric in my stash, I love when that happens!  I want to share with you how easy this can be and many of the simple tricks that I use.  Sewing with Knits is on the schedule for March.   This is an advanced- beginner level project that you should for sure try!  Sign up early so you can get your choice of fabric ordered.  The project is an easy to wear tunic that is great to wear with skinny jeans and leggings.  You will love sewing with knits-really!

I hope learning to sew garments is on your list.  It’s fun, and not only sewing for yourself, but for others, too.  I love to sew for my grandson, Rex.   Sewing for kids is very rewarding-you will get compliments to the max!!  (That’s always nice)  Little garments stitch up fast, too, and are fun to add your own touches to make them special.  Megan has been sewing for Rex like crazy!  She’s found some fun patterns and   will be offering Sewing for Toddler classes-and since we work together, you can bring your toddlers in and I’ll keep them occupied while you sew!  I’m very experienced in that area, too!

Another area I’ve added to my list of things to do this year is Modern Quilting.  We’ve just added a quilting machine to our inventory of machines and I am so excited to start playing with it!  I have been quilting for a few years now, and have probably made over 2 dozen quilts, as well as quilted bags and accessories.  I plan on going into more of the modern trend-improvisational quilting.    The Posh Tot Quilt is a fun-and very easy quilt on our schedule this month in 3 sessions.  I have been working on the sample and love it!  The colors-navy, olive green and orange – very bold, and eye catching!  Great colors for a boy quilt!

Well, these are just a few items on my list, what’s on yours?

Oh, and remember- if the class schedule doesn’t work with yours, you can always make any of the class projects in private lessons more convenient to your schedule.   Or, arrange a group lesson with a couple friends-that’s always fun, too!
