Stitching in Circles at Modern Patchwork Club

Ever wonder how to stitch in concentric circles?  Your machine most likely has a special attachment for doing this, which makes it super easy – but you can also use a tack, tape & a piece of cardboard to do the same thing!!  We did just that this week at Modern Patchwork Club and here are the results!

Everyone impressed themselves with this technique .  Join us monthly to learn the basics of quilting and make fun projects such these fun round trivets as practice!  Next month, we’ll be meeting on September 13th and will be learning the snowball block.

Hope you can join us next month for some stitchy fun!  Modern Patchwork Club meets monthly, you can join at any time.Bring your machine and have some fun with us!  $10 RSVP required.

We also have a  Quilting Basics class scheduled on August 17th, 10am-noon.  Call to register 216-220-4808.

We’ve explored  simple log cabin blocks, stair stepping, stitching in straight lines, free motion & more.

Monthly on 2nd Fridays, bring your machine & basic supplies.  $10 RSVP required.  August 9th, 6pm.

Sewing Happy Hour 1

We’ve been slacking on our blog posts… Fail. Here’s a bit of what went on during our Sewing Social on Thursday evening:

It sounds like everyone has decided to rename the evening “Sewing Happy Hour.” Maybe it was the wine. We all had a blast! Currently we are working on a confetti quilt to raffle off at the Lakewood Arts Fest with proceeds to benefit a local charity.

You should join us next month! Many of us worked on the quilt but there were also attendees busily stitching personal projects as well… It’s just more fun to sew in the company of other [crazy] fun sewists!

Introducing monthly group classes!

Everyone’s been asking for group classes, so here they are!

First Tuesdays will be Quilt Clinic.  We’ll be playing with modern quilting methods while making simple projects such as totes & zippered pouches.  The emphasis being on “play”, this is what helps our creativity-when was the last time you actually played and experimented with fabrics, color and thread?  October 4th we’ll be making a  tote using a couple different fabrics and in-line quiting-this really changes the look of fabrics when using different colors of thread-this is easy but very impressive!

Second Tuesdays will be Alterations Clinic, some months will have a specific topic as well, so bring something that applies, as well as some other garments to work on.  I’ll guide you on each step – hems, taking in or letting out, etc.   October 11 will be Hollywood hems, learn how to hem your jeans leaving the original stitching, very cool – seriously!

Third Tuesdays will be project classes.  Easy stuff  like skirts, accessories, wine totes, applique pillows, and more!  October 18 will be a skirt workshop-I am in love with all the maxi skirts at Anthropologie and just can’t get enough!  I”ve made two so far, using our fabulous Amy Butler Challis.  Flowing fabric like challis, stable knits or soft cords would be perfect!

November classes will include a fun quilted zippered pouch,  open alterations clinic and  a quilted wine tote.  Stop in to see the class samples – I’ve been having lots of fun working on them!  And, of course, your class suggestions are always welcome-if you see a project you’d like to learn, let me know!

Remember to sign up early and bring a friend!  Each session is $35 and meets from    6-8:30pm.  We do have a minimum of 3 students to hold the classes, and payment is due upon registration, which must be made at least 5 days in advance, you’ll also get your supply list and homework at that time!  Class sizes are limited.  And, don’t worry – we still have lots of time open for private lessons!

Many of the projects require you to cut and prepare before the class-that way we can get sewing faster!!  You can always stop in to prep your class projects in the studio, too,  just call ahead and we’ll make room for you!  Group classes are for intermediate seamsters, you should be familiar with your machine and  sew confidently. Private lessons are suggested for beginners.

You are encouraged to bring your own machine & sewing kit (be sure all your tools are labeled!

Tuesdays just got fun!

Modern Quilting

Have you wanted to try modern quilting, but don’t know where – or how to start?   Join us this Wednesday evening for our popular Easy Peasy Quilt class.  Mix patterns and colors, learn how to piece, quilt and bind.  With a collection of Amy Butler prints in your quilt, you will be the envy of all your stitchy friends!

Yep, from start to finish in 3 weeks.   I will caution you, though, you’ll want to make another as soon as you finish your first one, they are that easy and fun!  Definitely not your traditional quilt, these modern quilts make excellent wedding gifts, baby gifts  & are great for picnics, too!   Wednesdays, June 8, 15 & 23,  6pm-8:30pm.  $90.

Color Play 1

So many of our customers and students feel nervous and anxious when faced with the challenge of grouping colors and patterns. When admiring a shelf or stash of fabrics filled with all of your favorite colors, how do you choose?

Heidi is a pro at helping you keep your cool when faced with developing themes and grouping colors! Don’t you love her sample? It’s been hanging in the shop and attracting so much attention!

By the end of class you’ll feel more confident about working with large prints, patterns, and bold solids.

COLOR PLAY APR 7, 6-8:30pm  $45 (THURS)** The date for this class has been changed to Saturday morning, April 23, 10am-1.  We’ll be meeting for our Modern Quilt Social on April 7th-please join us for some stitchy fun!

Quilted Pillow class

Tomorrow night we’re making Chopped Vegetables…that’s a pattern for a quilted pillow not a Weight Watcher snack!  It’s really a fun technique, there are 4 different styles in the pattern by Elizabeth Hartman.   There are a few openings left in the class Tuesday evening, call if you’re interested!

Playing with different colorways is the fun part, and also the quilting itself!  You’ll want to make tons in all colors, and this is a great project for using your favorite fabrics  in your stash, too!  I love how the line stitching transforms the fabric and gives it a whole different personality.  You’ll see this straight line stitching in many new patterns, books & magazines.

I am surrounded by strips of colorful fabrics

Help!  I’m obsessed with quilting this week.  I’m loving the quilt patterns in Malka Dubrawsky‘s book, Fresh Quilting, which you can find in our store.   The colors and designs really are all fresh and simple–and addicting!   I am captured by her techniques and the un-fussiness of everything!  My kind of quilting.

This is what I pieced last night and this morning following guidelines for Nate’s Quilt,  the size is perfect for a wall hanging, 4 groups of 9 blocks, a total of 36 squares.  The combination of prints and solids really appeals to me along with the bold colors, and alternating warms and cools really makes it pop.

The free motion stitching will be icing on the cake.  I love the modern look of  straight stitching round and round in a block, once you get the hang of it you start to experiment with thread colors, which can also add lots of interest.

Stop in to see the finished product, and while you’re here you might want to sign up for the Free Motion Workshop on Feb 19th.  And, don’t forget Sewing Perks!  Sign up with a friend and you both get $10 off!!

Free Motion Quilting 2

Try your hand at free motion, yep, get loose and stitch all over everything!  Once you try it you will want to quilt every project you make!  This is a demo/hands on class, so you’ll see a demonstration of the technique and we’ll have several machines set up so you can try your hand at it.  It’ll be lots of fun so be sure not to miss it.  It seems everyone is interested in this technique!  March 14, 1-3:00 pm $15. (please register by March 11)

We’ll be taking sign-ups during the demo for the  workshop  scheduled later in the month where we’ll be making a quilted bag, the sample is almost done! If you’ve ever taken a class with us, you know how much fun it is to spend an afternoon at Stitch.  Friends + sewing = fun at Stitch!

Join our Burdastyle Sewing Club , we’ll be meeting monthly on the 2nd Saturday starting April 3rd.

Check our classes page for updates on classes scheduled for February and March.

MetroHealth and Stitch Cleveland

Stitch Cleveland is partnering with MetroHealth and The Cleveland Institute of Art to contribute to the Aids Memorial Quilt. Together, we will be contributing 20 new panels to the quilt that is displayed throughout the country. 20 Cleveland area families will be chosen to team up with artists from CIA and volunteers from Stitch Cleveland to create and assemble 3′ x 6′ panels that will then be used to create a 12′ square quilt to be displayed in Atlanta, GA and be a part of the traveling exhibit!

Stitch Cleveland is excited to be a part of this project. Janome has kindly donated machines for our use. Sulky has donated supplies such as thread and stabilizer. We are still looking for volunteers to help the families with their creations. Sewing experience is great but not a necessity… we will also need quilt sitters, sketchers, and much more! For more details about volunteer opportunities with Art, Activism and Aids you can click, call or stop in!

Soft Basket workshop

Another great project using channel quilting.  Great for organizing your projects or the kids toys, and they make great gift baskets, too!  Join us for this fun class where you’ll learn how to insert a round bottom and how to make different size baskets, too. Saturday morning, August 15th, 9am-noon.

I made this one for a baby shower, and stuffed it with disposable diapers.  Wouldn’t this also make a great gift for a new knitter, add some yarn and a pattern-she’ll love it!

Stop next door at Blackbird Baking Company for a scone and coffee on your way in, mmmm!

Stitchin’ up some color

Rainy day sewing

Rainy days are the best for sewing aren’t they??  Saturday morning we were thinking just that.  Check out these awesome  baskets made in this weeks Soft Basket class.  We had a great time sewing & watching the rain through the front windows.  And it did help that Blackbird had sticky buns and fresh coffee!!

IMG_0713Coordinating some old fabrics from fabric stashes and new fabrics  from our store, ducks, birds, flowers and prints-they each have a  personality of their own, don’t they?

In this class we learned an  easy technique on how to insert a round bottom, channel  quilting, how to apply a band, and handles.  The handles are  pre-made of heavy duty canvas with contrast topstitching to give  a utilitarian look to the basket, you could also make the handles  of a contrast fabric to give it a different look-all these options are  discussed in class.

Warm summer evenings are also great for sewing!

Check out these students and their projects from last Thursday nights Quilted Cosmetic Bags class. Can you tell we had fun?  We learned how to quilt, insert a zipper, made a loop handle and a cool zipper pull accent, too!

IMG_6503I was so inspired I made another one the next morning using Amy Butler home dec fabric to match my laptop cover.

Look for these classes on the schedule for August
