Yes, we’ve been open since the beginning of June, but you know how it is — finally we get to take a quick breather and host a grand opening extravaganza! We’ll be in the shop all day from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the 21st doing demos, drawing for prizes and celebrating, so stop by and join the fun. (Press release is here, if you’re interested).
Bring your knitting, your crochet, your embroidery, your sewing, your friends, but most importantly — YOU!
We’re excited to announce that Katherine Shaughnessy, author of The New Crewel: Exquisite Designs in Contemporary Embroidery
will be teaching a class at Stitch Cleveland 14 July and signing her gorgeous book afterwards.
A Cleveland native (she now lives in Texas), Katherine’s mother taught her crewel embroidery at age six. In art school, she began using a needle and thread to construct large sculptures, and to piece together her collage paintings. Later, she earned a graduate degree in Fiber Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a few years ago, after a long search for cool, modern crewel kits, Katherine launched Wool & Hoop.
We stock Wool & Hoop kits at Stitch Cleveland and Katherine will be bringing more with her as well. Need ideas for using crewel in a modern, fun way? Check out this page on her website!
Class spaces are limited, so sign up soon. The class will run from 10:00-11:00 a.m. and the book signing from noon-2:00 p.m., so there will be time to hang out and keep stitching if you like! Cost is $45, and it includes a class kit designed by Katherine with all the materials you’ll need. To register with a credit card or eCheck, click the link below, or send in a physical check (address). First come, first serve for class spaces.
What does crewel work look like? Here are examples from Wool & Hoop kits:

We know a lot of fiber people who also cross over into fine art and paper-based forms of expression, so we’ve signed up for an art journal to be kept here at Stitch Cleveland on 1001 Journals, the successor to the 1000 Journals project. Follow its progress here, or stop by the shop to contribute. I know I’ve got some ideas for creating fabric postcards inside the book myself.
Greetings to our crafty compatriots at Handmade Detroit who linked us — we’d love to see you here soon! It’s more fun than a trip to the casino, even. And hi to realneo.org! We love northeast Ohio, of course, and delight in helping our neighbors get craftier, so come down and take a class, contribute to the journal, you name it…
Are you a sock knitter? Do you want to be? We’re expanding the curriculum and the yarn offerings here at the shop to celebrate our friends Lime and Violet‘s new sock book (out next month), and because summer is the perfect time to knit smaller projects like socks!
Do you like 100% wool sock yarns, or a wool and nylon blend? Superwash wool? What size needles do you like to knit socks with? Top up? Top down? More unusual constructions or techniques? Our behind-the-scenes sock class-planners want to know.
As an added incentive, if you comment on this post, we’ll offer you a discount on your first sock class or sock yarn purchase.
Don’t forget that Shannon is podcasting live from the shop with knit designer and author of Naughty Needles, Nikol Lohr at 2:00 p.m. Call in or stop by!

Updates.
We’re really looking forward to Knit in Public Day this weekend. The main festivities will be going on between 11:00 and 4:00, so pack up your needles and come knit with us!
Meanwhile, we’ve been focused on painting, organizing and unpacking everything into the shop. Heidi and I went to TNNA, a needlearts trade show, this past weekend and ordered some lovely things for Stitch Cleveland, including Soak fine fiber wash. We stocked up on not only their regular scents but also the new limited-edition Amy Butler “Sola” scent, and got to meet Amy herself. And yes, of course we asked if she wanted to come up and teach!
We’ve got a new Flickr account so add us as a friend if you like. Or join the Stitch Cleveland Flickr group and post photos of your creations from classes here! You can add up to five photos per week to the group photo pool. The lovely ladies you see at left were some of Heidi’s sock monkey class students last night.
Gift certificates — we’ve had requests, and just so you know, we do offer them. Email shop@stitchcleveland.com with what you’d like (a certificate for a particular class? a particular dollar amount?) and we’ll either email you a printable version or hold it for you at the shop.
what’s everyone saying?
