Classes.
Okay, you asked… here it is. Mother-daughter, mother-son, father-daughter, father-son, mother-step-daughter, father-and-someone-else’s-kid… well, parent-child sewing classes. Our project will be lounge pants that are simple enough for a beginner — even if neither parent nor child knows how to sew! Our first offering of this class will be on the 20th of October — check our calendar for a more complete description.
Come to your four hour lesson empty handed and leave with a completed project you can both enjoy! The price of this class is $45. This fee includes your fabric (you choose from an assortment of patterns during class), patterns, and notions! We have extra machines for your use, but you’d better sign up fast! — there is a three team minimum (three parents & three children).
Thursday, September 27, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. is the final Match Day for 2007. There are new materials coming in from architectural and interior design firms. You are invited to collect materials such as empty binders, upholstery samples, wallcovering, ceramic tile, carpet, and brick samples. Business Interiors and Environments is hosting the event in the parking lot behind their building at 2003 St. Clair Avenue, and the rain date is Friday, September 28th!
ZeroLandfill Celebration, a community wide material reclamation project, now in its second year, returned to downtown Cleveland this summer through October 5, 2007. Designed to divert from local landfills specification waste generated by architecture and interior design firms, ZeroLandfill is an effort to collect and redirect expired evaluation samples ranging from carpeting, upholstery and wall covering, to brick, tile and three ring binders. Local manufacturers, schools, artists, and other sources are encouraged to participate by receiving the diverted goods collected by the ZeroLandfill project team and re-using the materials as feedstock for production processes, works of art, product design, and educational
materials.
This is an exciting grassroots effort connecting the arts and education communities to the sustainable community in a way that is mutually beneficial. Materials collected are free, and many students are benefiting from enhanced resources to the classroom. The specification samples are not only diverted from landfill, but continue on to have a new life. Christy Gray of the RED DOT Project, is collecting images of the artwork and art projects created from materials collected. Please email images to her at christy@reddotproject.org throughout the year.
We just received a giant shipment of Subversive Cross Stitch kits and patterns at Stitch Cleveland. Still on their way: a wide selection of unique cross-stitch patterns direct from a small company in Hungary.
Knitters take note: these Hungarian cross-stitch patterns are particularly well-suited to stranded colorwork (Fair Isle-style knitting), and would look stunning worked in the center of a sweater. If you’re interested in taking a class on adapting needlework patterns to knitting, let us know!
Thanks to all of our friends who came to Stitch Cleveland to help out with our quilt for Quilt Pink this weekend! We will be scheduling more days in the future to complete our project. We had to jet out of town late last night to arrive in New York. The reason for our quick flee? We were invited to the Martha Stewart Show! Monday’s show is all about sewing. Watch and see if you can spot us! Heidi and Megan will be wearing clothes they made as well as handmade accessories! Don’t worry, we won’t arrive home empty handed. We will also shop around for some great fabrics to bring home to all of you in Cleveland!
We now have signed copies of Softies: Simple Instructions for 25 Plush Pals in stock, so let us know if we need to put one aside for you. Lucky the Dog softie is blogging from the road, and there’s a new Softies group on Flickr as well.
Be sure to visit while the trunk show is still here so you can check out Lucky and his friends in person!
Also, there’s a contest afoot with the author’s website Softies Central. We could tell you more here on the website, but then you wouldn’t come visit, would you?
(Oh, and in case you were wondering what was going on in the photo at left, the Stitch Cleveland softies are trying to get in and make friends with the visitors…)
Are you a Softies fan? Then you’ll want to come down to Stitch Cleveland 15-25 September, while we’re hosting the Softies trunk show. We’ll have copies of the book available and — of course — plenty of adorable plush goodness to squeeze. What is a softie? Well, let’s quote the Chronicle Books website about the book itself:
Stirred by the Japanese craze for plush toys called “softies,” veteran crafter Therese Laskey commissioned acclaimed artists from around the world to create projects to share. From Japan to Israel to Chile to Texas, each artist brings a wicked sense of fun to the 25 cute, weird, edgy, or artful creations offered here: a cupcake pincushion; delicate snow bunnies; a peculiar robot; and many more quirky creatures. Cheeky photos, easy instructions, and ready-to-use pattern sheets make it a cinch to whip up these irresistible gifts. Best of all, a folder at back holds the patterns while spiral binding makes for craft-friendly use.
We’ll be hosting special softie-related classes and events during the trunk show, so keep an eye on our calendar.
what’s everyone saying?
