learn to sew

December at Stitch

Whew! – what a whirlwind December has been !  We’ve had so much fun teaching our students many new skills! Birthday parties, Girl Scout troups & lots of fun classes for kids have really kept us busy! We have made a few changes to accomodate larger classes and have added an area for parents to relax while their kids learn, too!

Sewing Bootcamp- our most popular class for new seamsters is offered monthly on Saturday mornings.  This is a 3- week series for beginners – or to refresh your sewing skills.  Learn Sewing machine basics, make a pillow and a pair of PJ pants! This is a great class for kids to learn about their new machines! Saturdays, 10-noon. Ages 8 & up

Fashion Series for Girls is an ongoing fashion sewing class where students sketch, sew & chat fashion!  Last month they made circle skirts. This month we had a “jacket challenge”  Students all made a simple design jacket using sweatshirt fleece, then they added extras to make it their personal style! Thursdays, 6:30-8:15pm Ages 10-13

Sewing for Kids is an after school sewing session, where kids learn sewing skills and make all kinds of fun stuff!  Bags, apparel, stuffies, pillows and more!  They are encouraged to bring their own machine to get to know it as they learn new techniques. Last month they made Fashion applique totes that were quilted with a bow applique, corduroy skater skirts, plushies & pillows!  Fridays, 3:45-5:45. Ages 8-10.

Crafty Ninjas are fun classes for the younger crowd! Make a fun socktapus or fabric snake. Ages 5 & up, check the calendar for dates.

Gift Certificates are great gift ideas – give an experience – the gift of learning!

Here are a few photos of what we’ve been up to!  Love these kids! xox

These little seamsters are in our Thursday night Kids Sewing lessons, which have become very popular!  Their projects for January included this embellished pillow – they had lots of fun adding sequins to the caravan elephants! Next week they’ll be finishing up their skirts and having fun in our photo shoot!  Each week we review the basics so they get lots of practice  threading their machines, winding bobbins & changing stitches.  They are amazing!

Stay tuned for our weekly Sewing Lessons for Grown-ups schedule!  Lots of fun, small projects to perfect your tehniques.

Inventory your sewing room 1

For years I’ve been wanting to inventory my sewing room. Patterns, fabric, notions… Everything. It would be great to have a file at my fingertips that I can look through when choosing my next project instead of having to dig through my closets and bins. Also, for those of you who own businesses where you need to purchase fabric and notions, it is necessary to know what purchases you’ve made for the year to appropriately claim them on your taxes at the end of the year.

I figure there are two ways to go about this: physical or digital.

I like the idea of having samples of my fabrics clipped to inventory cards in a physical file that I can look through. I came across one at crafty staci. She even has a free printable for the inventory card available for you to download and some great suggestions on how to put them into action!

If you’re looking for a more ‘at your fingertips’ solution you can try one of the many apps available. I’ve been using one for my iPhone called Sewing Room. It allows you to scan the barcode on all patterns from major pattern companies to enter them into your inventory. A picture pops up along with all the details! You can even enter your own notes. This app also lets you take pictures of each of your fabrics and enter lots of identifying information to accompany it in your digital inventory. You can also make lists of people you’d like to sew for and projects you’re working on! I really like that I can enter in where I bought my items and how much I paid. Don’t worry – even if your pattern collection includes lesser known designers and companies, you can enter them manually and take your own picture! Can you tell I’m excited about this?

I’m really going to work on this project this week… I’ll let you know how it goes! Has anyone else been working on becoming more organized with their sewing?

Absolute beginners

But not for long!     These three ladies learned the basics of sewing in one afternoon and each made a decorator pillow, complete with invisible zipper!  They’re planning on meeting at the PJ Sewing Party for their next project, snacks and libations will make it even more fun!

Call us to schedule a girls afternoon or evening out at Stitch, you know you want to!
